Riddle Me FAQ

• I get a message that says: "You don't have enough items in your inventory to make a puzzle that long..."
• The program is telling me I need to register...

I get a message that says: "You don't have enough items in your inventory to make a puzzle that long.

You may not have enough items or you selected indoor only items for the puzzle but some of your items could be outdoor items (or vice-versa). If that's not the case, then you may have selected age 13+ and it's possible that a couple of the selected items don't have riddles available for that age. With 5000 riddles on 400 objects and being age-specific, there aren't always riddles for every object for every age (while sometimes there are several)

What we recommend is that you either select all the inventory you're willing to choose from on the Home Inventory list and then generate the puzzle (and you can customize it once it's generated), or you can select a slightly younger age and see if it generates a puzzle based on that age, and then you can customize the hunt and manually select harder riddles for your hunt. You can even create your own objects and riddles.

The program is telling me I need to register...

That means you just haven't unlocked the program yet. See this next topic for how to do it.

Where's my unlock code and where do I put it?

If you are having difficulty unlocking Riddle Me here's what to try.

1) After purchasing Riddle Me, you should have received an email with a download link and an unlock key from sales@livingtreesoftware.com or one of our affiliates. If you have a spam filter please check it.

2) Download and install Riddle Me. After saving the file to your hard drive, double-click it to install.

3) Run Riddle Me by clicking start, programs, Riddle Me folder, and Riddle Me program.

4) As the program loads there is a box that will pop up asking for your code. Fill that out and click OK and you're all done. If it doesn't pop up because you've already cleared the box, just look on the main screen for the blue text that says click here to unlock Riddle Me.

5) Enjoy Riddle Me!

I'm getting an error when I try to run Riddle Me

On a few machines we have had issues with the program not operating properly. This is most typically a 64-bit Vista machine but has in certain circumstances been on XP. We aren't exactly sure why this happens, but it can usually be solved by installing an older version of Riddle Me which contains all the same riddles and functionality but is missing some of the newer speed optimizations. Download it by clicking here.

You may also want to make sure you are running in administrator mode and not as a limited user.

Does this come on CD? How do I make a backup copy?

Not at this time. Your order is for a downloadable product. We may offer a CD in the future, but for now if you want a backup, just burn a copy of the program you download to a CD and write the unlock key on the front of the disk.

My copy is only printing out the sample puzzle.

You haven't unlocked the software yet. Look for your receipt again and find your unlock code/key. Then follow the directions above to get it into the program.

I can't download or I'm getting a security error

This seems to be more common with AOL users but has happened for others. When you click the link to download Riddle Me, a dialog box opens asking if you want to OPEN or SAVE the file. Do NOT select open. Save the file to your hard drive and then install it.

Every time I try to run the program it installs again

You are running the installation program instead of the actual program. Once you install Riddle Me you can archive or delete the original file. To run Riddle Me, click your start button, go to programs, look for the Riddle Me folder, and then click the Riddle Me program inside the folder.

Is there a way to view the riddles before printing them? Print to PDF?

If you do not have a pdf printer on your computer, you can get a free one from www.cutepdf.com. Install it and then when you have the option to print out something from Riddle Me, choose that printer instead of your attached printer, and you can save files to pdf. Then you can take those elsewhere to print. On rare occasion, someone has reported a problem where Riddle Me won't print to their specific printer. Printing to a pdf and then opening the pdf and printing it out has typically resolved those issues. The next version of Riddle Me will support pdf's directly.

Can I put my software on a different computer?

Not a problem. Your license is for your personal use on whatever machine you want.

The program is freezing/locking up on me

If Riddle Me is locking up on you, this is extremely rare. The 2 cases we've found to cause this problem are:

1) Bad installation or bad download. Please uninstall Riddle Me, and reinstall it. You can download a copy from http://www.riddleme.net/download.cfm.

2) You are using a computer with multiple user profiles and are running the software from a "limited" user and not the administrator. If your computer is exhibiting strange behavior, you can help force this mode by right-clicking on the program icon and selecting "run as administrator". That has solved the problem for one particular case on a Windows Vista machine.

The background picture isn't printing.

Please check your color ink cartridge. Print something else with color and see if it's empty.
